Where can you get waterproof pants for hiking? I'm going hiking trip camp next month and I was told to buy plastic pants waterproof or wear on top of pants, I'd be wearing. Does anyone know where you can buy this kind of pants that I can keep warm and dry?
Thank you
You do not want plastic pants and rubber, you `ll die in them. You `ll end up like pants wet from sweat, it might be the heart of winter and you" ll sweat bc he traps body heat and moisture condensation will collect and gather sweat. A garbage bag is waterproof, but it does not rain poncho makler ideal bc it does not breathe. Look into getting a pair of rain pants breathable decent too. Backcountry.com, Sierratradingpost.com, EMS.com all have great rain pants.
The cotton fabric is a terrible thing to wear in wet weather. It retains moisture on the skin and does not dry quickly, if ever. However, many hikers wear jeans or cotton trousers and hiking in wet finish their walk in misery.
Rain pants
Rubberized tight old / vinyl rain pants are a good choice for long distances at a moderate pace easy in the rain. The rain rolls. They hold the sweat, so they are not useful if you're walking at a pace sweat production. Usually, these full zip on the sides, allowing you to step into them or wear them on other pants, shorts, or tights. Rain pants are often cold to the skin, so a sub-layer is recommended.
Some good advice here. Stay away from cotton. Stay away from cheap vinyl they sell at Big 5 and other discount stores. It is worth spending a little more for something that will keep you comfortable and last longer. If you want something cheaper to watch Designs Sierra brand. They have pants ultralight. They are made for wind resistance, but will keep you dry in light rain. They are not seam sealed so if you get into bad stuff, they will leak a little. A step up from the pants would ULM pants hurricane. They are waterproof and breathable. Not as good as Gore-Tex, but better than plastic. Incidentally, Gore-Tex is a brand of waterproof and breathable. Almost every brand has its own version of this and it is generally less expensive. If you want something better there are many brands and choices out there (Marmot, REI, Mountain Hardwear). I linked a few different choices in the Sources section of the more expensive less. Good luck!
Camping stores are your best bet. There are many types of pants available to shop. Gore-Tex is a fabric that breathes and is both waterproof.
Check sierratradingpost.com they have good clearance deals on outdoor gear. I want a pair of pants. Gore-Tex is fine if you can afford.
